Swivl Smart Playback

A typical NFL football game lasts over 3 hours, but if you add up only the time where the ball is in play, it’s only about 10 minutes of action. What a waste of time! The same can be true for any video - not every minute is worth watching.

So, wouldn’t it be great if we could just skip the boring stuff and focus on the most important parts? Well, good news! We designed a machine learning algorithm to save you time and allow you to focus on moments in your videos that matter most. We call it Smart Playback and it’s available now to all Swivl Pro users.

With Swivl, recording content in your classroom couldn't be easier. It’s so easy that users typically record hours of video each week. We love hearing this! But videos are only useful when people watch them, and watching several hours of video each week can be lot to manage. Now, with Swivl Smart Playback, we’ve made it easy for you to watch the most important moments from those videos and skip the rest.

Don’t worry, we are not editing the original file. You can still watch the entire video with Smart Playback disabled. Simply switch the playback mode to normal to view the entire video.

If you are a Pro user, the next time you upload a video to Swivl Cloud you’ll notice that Smart Playback is auto-enabled for videos >10 minutes.

– Swivl Pro and Pro Plus users can use Smart Playback on any project created and uploaded to Swivl cloud by any user after 2/2/18.

– All Swivl cloud users can enable Smart Playback on projects uploaded by a Pro user after 2/2/18.

Make Time for Video - Save Time with Swivl

Time is the most precious resource we have. With more time educators can engage with more students, coaches can mentor more teachers, and administrators can save more district resources. As the world leader in classroom observation technology, we are dedicated to delivering new ways that help you save time.

Start Saving Time

We've talked with hundreds of teachers, coaches, and administrators to better understand how they conduct video observations. A common thread among everyone we’ve talked to is the struggle to make time for video observations. Setting up the recording is not the challenge - the Swivl C Series robot makes that part quick and easy. The real challenge is making time to review the video for self reflection or for video coaching. Who has time to sit through and watch hours of classroom video each week?

It's common when managing long videos to just skip around. Either you skip to sections you might have remembered were worth reviewing or you randomly skip around hoping to find something interesting. Obviously, that’s not an efficient process and we can do better. In fact, what if you could just press "Play" to review the high-impact moments from your video and did not have to remember when they occurred? Well, now you can!

Bookmarks

You use bookmarks all the time - from saving a page in your book to making your favorite websites easy to find. It's amazing how a small and simple thing can have such a big impact in helping us find the information we need, when we need it. With the tap of a button, you can finally bookmark video too! Bookmark your best moments for your coach to watch. Bookmark learning material to share with students. Bookmark an opportunity to improve, or an instructional practice from your observation rubric for later review. Add a bookmark in real-time for anything by simply pressing a button on the Primary Marker during a recording.

After you upload the video and view it in the Swivl cloud player, click on the bookmark to skip to the corresponding section in the video, just like a time-stamped comment. By bookmarking key moments as they happen, you can spend less time searching for those moments when reviewing the video. No more aimless skipping around! We believe this will be the standard for video coaching and self-reflection going forward.

Comment Playback

But wait - it gets even better. If you are a teacher and you share the video with a mentor, for example, they too will be able to see the bookmarks you left. In the best observations, coaches and peers leave time-stamped comments on teacher videos to focus the the conversation on specific, high-impact moments. For longer videos this could translate to dozens of comments per video. Now, with comment playback mode enabled, those high impact moments where a comment or bookmark was made will be played automatically. The complete video is still there, we just help you skip to the good stuff.

Smart Playback

Finally, omit any insignificant sections of your videos, such as periods of extended silence. Watch videos in half the time with intelligent playback. We enabled a machine learning algorithm that intelligently and securely analyzes the video in your project to optimize what you see and hear in your classroom. Turn 40 minutes into 10 and only watch what matters with Smart Playback enabled.

Do Students Talk Enough in Class?

Most teachers don’t realize how much time they spend talking during a lesson. While some teachers rightly elevate and emphasize student voices and limit their own talk time, most are unaware of the real breakdown of talk time between teacher (TTT) and students (STT). That’s because it’s hard to measure!

The more Markers (wireless microphones) used during recording, the better the analysis.

Teachers and coaches would need to watch several hours of classroom observation videos and manually keep track of how often each person speaks. It’s valuable information to have, but just not feasible to gather. Until now.

Starting today with Swivl Speech Analysis for Swivl Team Pro users, we automatically inform you of the breakdown between TTT and STT. After uploading your project to Swivl cloud, our algorithm goes to work analyzing the audio and video to show you the talk times - and silent times too!

Why are we doing this?

Student talk time is crucial to measuring student engagement. By recording audio of student groups, we can inform you about their activity levels so you can identify exemplary groups or students who need more attention.

How are we doing this?

Privacy is extremely important to everything we do here at Swivl and speech analysis is no different. We aren’t collecting any information about individuals. To produce the talk time data, we analyze the audio waveform for each audio track to determine if someone is actively speaking nearby or not.

In fact, we now use the same technology to improve the audio experience during Smart Playback.

Smart Playback v2.0

With Smart Playback enabled the most dominant audio channel* is enabled while the other channels are muted. For example, if a student is giving a presentation to the class, we enable playback of their Marker only.

When another student asks a question, playback instantly switches to the Marker closest to them to make sure you can hear each voice loud and clear.

*C-3 or C-5 robot required

Next Steps?
Talk to your coach, administrator, or district contact about upgrading to a Swivl Team account. Record a 10+ minute video with the C series robot and multiple Markers, then upload it to your Swivl cloud account. Underneath the video player in Swivl cloud you’ll see the speech analysis data.

Educators love using Swivl for video feedback to improve teaching skills. It’s perfect for tracking a teacher while recording high quality video and audio. But what about the students? Shouldn’t student interactions be a part of the video observation? Absolutely. That’s why the model for classroom video observations is moving towards Individualized Observations, where you can see and hear everyone in the classroom. We’re not just trying to get ahead of the trend, we’re defining it.

How can you measure a teacher's effectiveness without seeing their students?

The best video observations capture the teacher and the students. After all, we are trying to improve student learning and engagement. By adding a 2nd recording device, like an iPad, to your video observation you can observe how students respond to the teacher and how they interact with each other. Place the recording device to the side of the room or in front of a group of students to capture their facial reactions and emotions. Setup is fast and easy.

Dual-Camera recording is all about including student feedback.

Dual-Camera is just the beginning in making sure every student voice is heard and every face is seen in the classroom. Swivl Multi-Camera is the next step in fulfilling this ideal, learn more at swivl.com/multi-camera.

We want every principal, instructional coach, and teacher to have FREE access to Dual-Camera recording. So, we’ll be releasing the feature for free to all Swivl cloud users in the Fall. Stay tuned!
